November 2, 2020 – Minutes

Present:           Anne Lightburn, Louise Stillufsen, Pete Ritchings and Council liaison Caryn Byrnes

Absent:            Peter Renner, Don Rodgers, Dave Smith and Elaine Hennessy

Anne Lightburn called the ZOOM meeting to order at 7:00 pm.  The October 5 meeting minutes were approved as submitted. Anne reported that Kristen O’Rouke and the Environmental Commission have put out a flyer for volunteers to help clean up Lake of the Lillies.

Pete and Louise will put up the Tree City USA sign.

Debriefing the Annual Shade Tree Federation Conference, Louise commented on not using non-native trees and shrubs, in particular crepe myrtles. Dr. Tallamy was very inspirational for supporting insect populations with native plants and trees as caterpillars are essential food for baby birds.

Pete Ritchings said he would submit an educational article to the Ocean Star regarding the benefits to wildlife for leaving leaves in planting beds over winter.  He also reported that he will be setting up a pruning workshop for Nov. 21 conducted by Bill Brash.

Caryn Byrnes reported that the hazard trees behind the firehouse parking lot are scheduled for removal shortly.  She is still working on securing a larger water tank for efficiency purposes for next year’s summer worker.  She indicated that Clear Cut will be doing the landscape replacement at the comfort station.

Louise reported removing gator bags for the winter. Anne has also removed bags.

Anne brought up the issue of hazard trees on borough property and how to communicate with the borough to get quicker results.  Caryn recommended giving her pictures and addresses and she will push for quick removal. Anne agreed to take pictures and put together a file.

Caryn Byrnes reported the volunteer project call “Walk with Purpose” for October 17th along Channel and Inlet Drives a huge success.

The commission voted to fund one tree, if funds are needed, at the Arnold Avenue firehouse planting strip to be landscaped by the Environmental Commission.

No action has been taken regarding 308 Niblick violation.  Anne is trying to get approval to view the property and the replacement trees cited by the property owner.

Meeting adjourned 8:00 pm
