March 6th, 2023 Meeting Minutes
Meeting Attendees: Anne Lightburn, Mary Ellin Mallazzo, Dave Smith and Pete Ritchings
Absent: Peter Renner, Dennis Mallazzo, Louise Stillufsen and Liaison Caryn Byrnes
Guest Attendance: MJ Gradel
Anne opened the meeting at 7:00 pm. The February commission minutes were approved as submitted.
The commission discussed replacement trees at Little Silver Lake shoreline and agreed to plant 2 sweet gum, 3 Querus alba oak, 3 hackberry, 2 disease resistant elm and 2 honey locust. Anne will get cost quotes and submit a Fisher Family grant request to Chris Riehl.
The commission discussed new trees along the Chicago Ave. curb at the Antrim School field. They agreed on 8 Thorn less Hawthorn, 6 Service Berry and 6 Amur Mackia.
Dave Smith is still researching rain barrels and mounting strategies for the “Christmas tree” on Bay Ave.
MJ is polishing off the Memorial Tree proposal. She will contact ANJEC to see if they have publications available for their full color flyer on Native alternates to commonly used non-natives.
Pete reported that the students are working on the Peace Tree contest. A March 17th deadline for entries was agreed to. April 28th is Arbor Day for reading the student winner’s work and hopefully installing a bolder and plaque. It was suggested to check out what Jersey Sand and Gravel has for boulders.
Mary Ellin reported that there are 2 to 13 “Nominate Your Block” trees.
Anne will check with Kristin Trocone regarding the street tree removal, without a permit, at 211 Yale.
Anne requested people fill out the volunteer driving forms.
