Monday June 6, 2022 Meeting Minutes

Meeting Attendees: Anne Lightburn, Mary Ellin Mallazzo, Dave Smith, Pete Ritchings, and Louise Stillufsen

Absent: Dennis Mallazzo, Peter Renner, and Caryn Byrnes, liaison

Guest Attendance: Bill O’Shea and Clem Bremer

Anne opened the meeting at 7:00 pm.  The Peace Tree dedication will be a noon on June 10th.  Mayor Kanitra rand Chris Riehl will be attending. May minutes to be approved at the next meeting on June 30th at 307 New Jersey Ave. 7:00 pm.

Anne reviewed the pertinent aspects of the “new committee rules” including purchasing and Chris Riehl approvals for projects and social media. Anne has already secured approval for all remaining projects including press articles and facebook postings. The commission did object to the restriction on answering questions from the Ocean Star relative to shade tree commission activities. Anne will draft a memo on this restriction.

Louise agreed to be the contact for the fall Big Beautiful Tree Program.  The spring program was the largest at 32 trees. The Spring Nominate Your Block program was the smallest at only six.  Other plantings included the Peace Tree at Lake of the Lillies and 4 replacement trees from last year’s Nominate Your Block program.  A total of 43 trees have been planted to date. There are two more street trees to be planted at the firehouse strip on Arnold and on Atlantic at St. Peter School. Two “free trees” including a holly and willow oak also remain to be planted at Little Silver Lake replacing two dead trees.

Mary Ellin will circle back with Woodhaven regarding screening shrubs.  She also volunteered to contact the Will Smith, Superintendent of Schools, to discuss the planting street trees, between the curb and side walk, replacing four ash trees removed by the county this spring.

Pete Ritchings, managing the nursery project, recommended that the area behind the Arnold Ave firehouse not be used. Everyone agreed that borough hall would be a great location for the Salem Oak. Pete will contact Chris Riehl for approval.

The commission discussed governing body acceptance the Native Plant Society native tree list as an official list for the borough. Anne will draft a recommendation.

Upon examination, commission members recommended the removal of the failing oak at borough hall.  Anne with notify Chris Riehl.

There was no update on tree tags, commission street tree guidance, JCP&L landscaping, the memorial tree program and paver receipt.

Meeting adjourned 7:58 pm
