Point Pleasant Beach Shade Tree Commission

June 5, 2023 Meeting Minutes

Meeting Attendees: Anne Lightburn, Mary Ellin Mallazzo, Dave Smith, Pete Ritchings and Louise Stillufsen

Absent: Peter Renner, and Council Liaison Caryn Byrnes

Guest Attendance: MJ Gradel

Meeting opened at 7:00 pm. The May meeting minutes were approved with correction.

Mary Ellin reported that the resident on Sanborn would like a replacement for the Nominate Your Block tree that perished. Anne indicted that the spot maybe too wet for a street tree.

Anne and Louise reported on the joint Shade Tree Commission meeting in Manasquan. The good news is that the state is requiring municipalities to have ordinances in place to protect street and trees on private property from unnecessary removals to be in compliance for storm water mitigation. This information has been passed onto Chris Riehl.

MJ reported that the boulder for the Peace Tree plaque has been delivered. The plaque is in the works. She is targeting Sept. 21st as the dedication date. The memorial tree program will be finalized soon. MJ will continue to try to get trees planted along the New Jersey Ave. JCP&L fence. Management changes make this difficult.

Louise reported that high school students built a frame for the Liberty Elm commemorative poster and it has been hung in the High School. She was there for the commemoration and picture taking.

The commission discussed revising the Nominate Your Block program to an individual request for a free street tree.  The commission voted to make this change effective this fall and trees will be planted as funds are available.

Pete Ritchings reported that he has put up some of the tree identification tags on downtown Arnold Ave.

The commission agreed to participate in the Environmental Commission’s September Seafood Festival booth and promote the Big Beautiful Tree and Free Street Tree programs.

Anne will request mulch for the Little Silver shoreline trees.

Meeting adjourned at 8:35
