December 5th, 2022 Meeting Minutes
Meeting Attendees: Anne Lightburn, Mary Ellin Mallazzo, Dave Smith and Louise Stillufsen
Absent: Peter Renner, Pete Ritchings, Dennis Mallazzo and Liaison Caryn Byrnes
Guest Attendance: MJ Gradel, Hara Rola and Bill O’Shea
Anne opened the meeting at 6:30 pm.
Anne and Louise reported on the joint Shade Tree and Environmental Commission meeting in Manasquan. One of the issues is ordinance writing and there are grants for ordinance writing and Sustainable Jersey have ordinance templates. None of the towns represented had ordinances requiring a street tree for new construction. Manasquan has a great Web site, that we should consider imitating. Also mentioned was the concept of a Tree of the Month for newspaper recognition.
Mary Ellin presented the invasive plant list, which Hara Rola provided, and the commission recommended some minor edits. Mary Ellin also presented her draft for street tree recommendations. Anne will meet with Mary Ellin to go over those recommendations before the 2023 meeting.
Anne reported that Bill Brash is doing an analysis of the soil sample test on the Christmas tree that died next to Bam Bam burgers. The town has replaced it with a new tree. This will be the third tree on that site.
The commission reviewed the memo to be sent to tree service companies apprising them of the need for a permit for street tree removal. Dave provided a comprehensive list of tree service companies with addresses. Anne will forward to Caryn Byrnes with a recommendation that the memo be sent by Code Enforcement to tree service companies.
Louise noted that the permit application for a street tree removal needs some editing. She will undertake those edits.
Mary Ellin volunteered to speak with the school Superintendent to see if they are amenable to apply for the DEP grant for trees on school property.
Bill O’Shea will check on the trees at the condo complex on Delaware Ave.
Anne thanked Louise for organizing the joint Environmental and Shade Tree Commission holiday get together is on Friday Dec. 16th at the Lobster Shanty.
