POINT PLEASANT BEACH RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Committee Meeting Minutes
Monday August 17, 2020 – 6:00pm – virtual meeting via Zoom
Call to order: 6:05pm by Committee Chairperson Ryan Simunovich
In attendance: John Babbini, Debra Bodine-Vazquez, Kelly McGee, Michele Mosca, Robby Neill,
Kieran Schultz, Ryan Simunovich Doug Vitale. Note: Non-member guest in attendance: Ann
Lightburn.
Review prior meeting minutes: Michele Mosca read the minutes from the June 22, 2020 and July
20, 2020 meetings. A motion to accept waiving a reading of the minutes was made by Debra
Bodine-Vazquez and seconded by John Babbini.
Executive reports:
Chairperson: Ryan Simunovich began the meeting by discussing Maryland Ave. beach, as t he town’s
lease is up this year. The Open Space Committee has asked Recreation to comment on any
requests/changes we think we need. It seems the beach doesn’t bring in revenue to the town, so
there may be some opportunities to change the RFP we send out to the lifeguard companies to
benefit Rec and the town. Ryan reviewed pros and cons and requested Committee members offer
further input and suggestions via email. Open Space Committee member Ann Lightburn suggested
the possibility of building options for Recreation use into a new lease with AquaServe, specifically to
allow for Rec activities to have access during the day. Ryan will assemble a subcommittee to further
work on this.
Ryan also reported the Skate Park is in the final stages and legislative approval from the Mayor and
Council is expected this week. The Park is slated to open in September and while there are no fees
plans, usage permits (stickers) will be required. A sign up will be created for interested parties to
register to use the Park, and the possibility of doing this through an app was discussed.
Correspondence: Michele Mosca reported having received several emails this month at
RecreationCommittee@pointbeach.org , mostly about summer camp refunds, and one email related
to the opening of the skate park.
Treasurer: no updates reported.
Council Liaison: Doug discussed the plans for the Bonfire (see below) and reported feedback from
past events. Event set up begins around 9am and volunteers are needed to help make this year’s
bonfire a success. A request for help will be sent out shortly.
Subcommittee reports:
Basketball: no updates to report.
Bonfire: The committee discussed the event at length and a suggestion was made to push the date
to September 26, 2020 at 6pm. A motion to approve was made by John Babbini and seconded by
Debra Bodine-Vazquez. Unanimous committee member approval. Doug suggested pre-registration to
keep the event open to PPB residents and taxpayers only to assist with crowd size. Food and
entertainment options were also discussed, as well as contacting a local tree service to donate wood
instead of using pallets as in years past. Ways to improve lighting after dark were also discussed.
Ryan will submit the special event permit and Doug will speak to the Police and Fire Chiefs.
Family Fishing Day: This year’s event will be held on O ctober 3rd 8am-11am at the Inlet. $5
registration fee. Ryan is also working on donations of bait, tee-shirts for the kids, and small trophies
for some categories. Ryan is leading this event and assistance from committee members is needed –
please contact Ryan if you are interested in helping out.
Social Media: no updates reported.
Summer Camp: no updates reported.
Summertime Surf: Discount codes were made available to the community for 20% off. They are
offering flexible scheduling this year which is really nice.
Wrestling: It was reported that Point Pleasant Recreation wrestling may be open, and Robby will
explore whether Beach can open as well.
Holiday Lights: no updates reported.
Best Day: no updates reported.
Tug of War: Ryan reported that this event will not be held this year.
Yoga on the Beach : Ryan reported that this event will be ending this week.
Uke on the Beach: Ryan reported that this event will also be ending this week, with a concert being
held tonight. 24 people registered and the Committee receives a portion of the registration fees.
New business/Open discussion:
Ideas for a fall event were discussed and the Committee is looking into an outdoor pumpkin
decorating contest. Beach vs. B oro seemed to be the top choice and it can be run in a similar manner
to the town sign contest with the Arts Committee.
Adjournment:
A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Debra Bodine-Vazquez and seconded by John
Babbini.
Meeting adjourned: 7:02pm by Ryan Simunovich
Next meeting: Monday, September 21, 2020, 6:30pm
Respectfully submitted,
Michele D. Mosca
Secretary, Recreation Committee
