6. 2019 Events
a) Snowman Decorating Contest ‐ Laura, Jackie and Joylene leads. Laura and Jackie advised that
there were 13 entries in total. Also said that the process needs to be tightened up for the next
contest so that all entries can be collected. Suggested that the prep for the contest next year
start earlier; acknowledged that it was a “last minute” event in 2019. Suggested to put posters
around Town as well in 2020. We had a nice write up in the Ocean Star. Thanked Kim Allen and
Sonya Fisher for allowing participants to pick up the forms at their businesses. In that regard, we
need to collect the left over forms from their places of business to store away for next year.
Sonya will provide the GC to VVG as a prize and Laura advised that they were waiting for the
trophies to be completed to hand out. Kristi advised Laura and Jackie that if they were
interested in leading the event for 2020, they needed to advise her so that it could be placed on
the Arts 2020 Calendar.
7. Upcoming 2020 Events:
a) 2020 Gala – Joylene lead – date locked in for March 21st. Ticket price will be $65 p/p. Theme
will be Black and White Masquerade. Joylene advised that she would be handing out
sponsorship forms for participants to pick up so that they could personally go out to prospective
sponsors. Also asked Laurie to email form to all committee members and volunteers. She asked
that everyone chip in to ask for solicitations. Arlene advised that she and Judy were on board to
go to merchants in PPB to ask. James is coordinating music, advised that he had a jazz guitar
player set up for the entrance music. Asked for genre of music suggestions. Waiting on
confirmation for artists. The Gala photographer will be a HS Key Club student. Laurie asked
Joylene if the Committee could see the menu that The White Sands has in mind for the Gala –
would like to look it over before the event. Joylene advised that for this year’s Gala she was
looking to bring on only 6 Ambassadors. She also advised that Susan Roche indicated she would
be back again, as well as the Jewelry Joint. Deb Smith and Peter Coulos have also expressed
interest in having a table, Joylene should contact them. We still have the Hargrove piece from
last year to auction. Lauren said she would look to see if we could auction online. Kim advised
that she had someone who could take video, she will connect him with Joylene. James suggested
that we keep ALL footage from the 2019 gala video, even if not using it. Christopher suggested
that we set a photo booth up at the 2020 Gala. Joylene advised that she was meeting with
Marianne later in the week to discuss Gala related expenses.
b) Juried Art Show – Carmelina lead, Lisa co lead. Will accept 50 submissions, but judge what is
submitted and only display “Best of Show” at Gala. Announcement of show will start on January
5th. Carmelina sent a report which stated that the Artist reception will take place at the White
Sands on April 21st. Cost will be $350. She has provided Marianne with budget estimate.
Carmelina and Lisa have event planned and will be circulating Prospectus to various Photo and
Art clubs.
c) Winter Dinner & Movie – Kim lead. Will be in February – a halfway to Summer 2020 event.
Work on idea and details. Kim advised that she had the Laurel Avenue Fire House reserved for
March 7th. Unless advertising (budget) is formalized and the event does not get enough
exposure, she would rather postpone until later so that her credit from the Halloween movie
event (which was postponed) does not go wasted. Can only postpone once. Kristi advised that
the ExCom would get back to her when the advertising budget had been formalized so that she
could properly plan the event, no matter when it was scheduled for.
d) Photography Classes –. Venue other than Library and advertising options. Carmelina will
discuss further in April 2020.
e) Spoken Word Festival – James lead. James advised that he was planning to hold the event the
last week of April 2020, that Friday and Saturday 24/25. Late evening on Friday and afternoon
on Saturday. Locations would be VVG and Ocean County Music. He had a handful of performers
lined up, playing a variety of music. Christopher advised that he had some poetry to share as
well. Lauren will provide James with the new Project Sheet shortly so that he could complete and
turn in to the ExCom for approval.
f) Easter Egg Painting Partnering with Jenks – Sonya to coordinate with Alex. Alex advised that
Easter activities were scheduled for April 11th and 12th. He will have definite date at the February
meeting. Members suggested branding the eggs with Arts logo. Event will be donation based;
can have a jar set up for collection. Should be well attended as customers come to the
boardwalk for the 2 for 1 ride ticket event. Sonya needs to complete a project sheet.
g) Rock Painting in Spring ‐ Kristi lead. Rte. 34 Gravel to donate rocks. Need to be picked up and
cleaned – possibly look to have delivered for minimal cost? Kristi advised that she will discuss
with Art Teacher and report back.
h) Murals – Jim lead. Building behind Joe Leone’s on calendar to be done as well in spring of 2020.
Any new murals planned for Jenks? Jim advised that he was talking to the Owner of Borden’s
about a mural and that he had one planned for the entrance to his studio. The muralist he had
lined up for the back of Beritazza has been non responsive. Laurie sent him an email while at the
meeting to get in touch with Kim and Kristi who both knew muralists who would be interested in
taking on the project.
i) Paint At Bandshell – Mary Ellen and Penny leads. Will resume when nice weather starts.
Advertise on Social Media in Spring. Mary Ellen and Penny advised that they will probably start
in May and go through the fall.
8. Ideas for permanent structure to hold “Locks of Love”. Placement of locks on chain link fence on
boardwalk at inlet leads to structural issues. Paul advised that the Council was going back to vote
on the concept again.
9. Storage of Equipment: Paul advised that work is still in progress on the building.
10. Marianne England – invite Chairperson of Metuchen Arts Committee to one of our meetings.
Marianne advised that her emails to the Chairperson were not being answered. This probably will
not happen.
11. Website: Christopher Cochran lead, Deb and Carmelina assisting. Christopher briefly discussed use
of Slack. Will educate the group further next month. It is a good platform for intra communication
amongst members; can be broken into specific topics/events for ease of tracking emails.
12. Marketing and Advertising: Deb Smith lead – Deb not in attendance, but did comment that the ad
Joylene sent for FB for the gala was too big. The ExCom will be working with Deb to come up with a
marketing budget for FB advertising for events. Will update the members shortly.
13. New Business:
a) Discussed Offshore BBQ wanting to place local artist work in their new restaurant.
b) Jackie suggested that we run a Talent Show, maybe in October. She will work on concept after
the Gala.
c) It was suggested that we bring in a Graphic Arts student from the HS to intern for us. They could
use the Committee as a college recommendation as well as work as volunteer hours. Kristi will
coordinate.
d) Two new members/volunteers attended the meeting: Denise Acanfora and Beth Suckow.
Denise will assist with daily FB posts. Beth advised Laurie that she will look into grants for the
Committee.
14. Adjournment: As there was no further New Business or Questions to discuss, the meeting
