Point Beach Arts Committee Meeting Minutes
December 9, 2019
The meeting was held at B2 Bistro and was called to order at 7:00 by Acting Chairperson, Laurie Vicari.
Attendees: The following members, volunteers and liaisons were in attendance: Paul Kanitra, Laurie Vicari, Jim Inzero, Kim Allen, Tim Allen, James Dalton, Kristi Monticello, Sonya Fisher, Lisa Lewis, Lauren Goldfarb, Joylene Rock, Laura Di Pasquale, Carmelina Carra, Arlene Testa, Christophe Cochran, Tracey Jackson, Deb Smith, Sue Fisher, Judy Van Brunt.
Laurie Vicari, Secretary, recorded the minutes of the meeting.
The Agenda attached as Exhibit A was presented as the format for the meeting.
- Approval of previous minutes:
Laurie moved, and Jim seconded approval of the minutes from the November 2019 meeting. Minutes were approved unanimously.
- Treasurer’s Report:
The Committee’s Treasurer was not present. Report not discussed.
- Introduction of new Members and 2020 Executive Committee including Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary:
The Committee welcomed and introduced its 2020 Executive Committee, which will be comprised of:
Lauren Goldfarb Edwards. Lauren introduced herself and Laurie and Paul advised the Committee that Lauren will take on the role of Chairperson starting January 1, 2020, along with the rest of the Executive Committee. Kristi Monticello, existing member, was introduced as Vice Chairperson. Marianne England, although not in attendance, was introduced as Treasurer and Laurie Vicari was introduced as Secretary. Paul thanked Gerrie Vergona for being the Committee Chairperson from its inception to June 2019 and then Laurie Vicari for stepping in as Acting Chairperson from June 2019 till December 2019.
The Committee also welcomed new members as they introduced themselves: Arlene Testa (2020 Council Liaison), Sue Fisher, Judy Van Brunt, Lisa Lewis and Tim Allen. Deb Smith reintroduced herself as she had joined the Committee previously but had not been formally introduced.
- Current 2019 Events
- Snowman Decorating Contest – Laura, Jackie and Joylene leads. Eric Rock cut out the forms. Forms are ready for pickup at Barefoot Real Estate and VVG. Judging will take place December 20th. Christopher will send out an email blast for participation.
- 11/29 Flash Mob/Caroling – Kristi lead. Event went well. Singers sang “Amazing” before the Veteran’s ceremony. Kristi advised that Tina Hennessey will take on the lead for the FM next year. Christopher suggested that we highlight the Foundation that we helped on our FB page. Also suggested that we streamline back end next year.
- VVG Ornament Decorating Contest – rescheduled from November 29th to December 15th so as not to conflict with activities during Tree Lighting Ceremony. Sign ups? Sonya advised that there have been 2 sign ups but there will also probably be walk-ins.
- Upcoming 2020 Events:
- 2020 Gala – Joylene lead – date locked in for March 21st. Ticket price will be $65 p/p. Theme will be Black and White Masquerade. Joylene sent out Sign Up Genius for volunteers for sub committees, Laurie resent. Volunteers on board? Joylene advised that no sponsors were on board yet – she needs a point person to coordinate sponsorships. Tracey and Arlene said that they could help out. Agreed to wait until January 2020 so as not to do so on the heels of the Cooks Tour. Go to 5 biggest donors from last year as well.
- Juried Art Show – Carmelina lead, Lisa co lead. Will accept 50 submissions, but judge what is submitted and only display “Best of Show” at Gala. Laurie will send Carmelina budget template. Art reception will be held at the end of April. Announcement of show will start on January 5th.
- Winter Dinner & Movie – Kim lead. Will be in February – a halfway to Summer 2020 event. Work on idea and details. Kim will discuss further at January 20202 meeting.
- Photography Classes –. Venue other than Library and advertising options. Carmelina will discuss further in April 2020.
- Spoken Word Festival – James lead. Suggested to hold in April 2020 to coincide with National Poetry Month. Any new ideas or progress? James advised this is still a work in progress.
- Easter Egg Painting Partnering with Jenks – need Arts Cttee Lead to work with Alex Taylor. Alex advised that Easter activities were scheduled for April 11th and 12th. He will work with Committee on collaborated event. Sonya volunteered to work with Alex on this event.
- Rock Painting in Spring – Kristi lead. Rte. 34 Gravel to donate rocks. Need to be picked up and cleaned – possibly look to have delivered for minimal cost? Kristi advised that she will discuss with Art Teacher and finalize at the February meeting.
- Murals – Jim lead. Mural on wall next to Train Station – completed – shared on Social Media. Good response. Building behind Joe Leone’s on calendar to be done as well in spring of 2020. Any new murals planned for Jenks? Jim suggested that we add a budget item to include payment to artists for work, possibly look at sponsorships to donate supplies.
- Paint At Bandshell – Mary Ellen and Penny leads. Will resume when nice weather starts. Advertise on Social Media in Spring. Penny advised she will be away until March/April 2020.
- Dates for 2020 Arts Committee Meetings. Usually the first Monday of each month, with some exceptions. Paul to advise. Paul is working to coordinate dates. Arlene will assume the Council Liaison position, but Paul will still be involved in meetings.
- Ideas for permanent structure to hold “Locks of Love”. Placement of locks on chain link fence on boardwalk at inlet leads to structural issues. Possible location for new structure to be East side of inlet parking lot by new trees. Sonya put Paul in touch with a metal fabricator. The Committee discussed several design options. Voted on PPB with Seagulls. Approximate cost $3,500.
- Storage of Equipment: Paul advised that work is still in progress on the building.
- Marianne England – invite Chairperson of Metuchen Arts Committee to one of our meetings. Marianne was not in attendance but had previously advised Laurie that she was working to coordinate the date for the invite.
- Website: Christopher Cochran lead, Deb and Carmelina assisting. Briefly discussed use of Slack.
- New Business:
- Lisa Lewis will be holding an Artist reception at the Municipal Building in January.
- Adjournment: As there was no further New Business or Questions to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 8:50.

- Marianne England – invite Chairperson of Metuchen Arts Committee to one of our meetings.
- Website – Infrastructure and website development progress – use of SLACK. – Christopher lead, Deb and Carmelina assisting.
- Marketing and Advertising – Deb Smith – Streamlining how we handle marketing, put process in place to simplify. How to handle paid advertising on FB?/G? Artist spotlight on FB and Instagram.
