Point Beach Arts Committee Meeting Minutes

The meeting was held in the office of Borough Hall and was called to order at 7:00 by Chairwoman, Gerrie Vergona.
The following members were in attendance:  Gerrie Vergona, Laurie Vicari, Paul Kanitra, Jim Inzero, Kristi Monticello, Barbara Russell, James Dalton, Marisa Gray, Brian Papworth, Charlene Taylor, Penny Davies.
The following volunteers were in attendance:  Carmelina Carra, Holland Paley.
Laurie moved and Paul seconded approval of the minutes from the June 18, 2018 and July 23, 2018 meetings.   Approved unanimously.
It was announced that Last Wave Brewery was added to the approved Venue List.
Gerrie advised that at this meeting ideas for 2018, 2019 and pending ideas would be focused on tonight.  She advised those in attendance that proposed activities should be sent to her and she would forward to Paul for approval.   She also advised that the Asbury Park Press would be publicizing the Committee’s events and that we will soon start Facebook advertising in order to get more artists involved.
Marisa and Jim advised that they have met with a few people regarding  the murals on buildings project.  They are identifying artists to do the work.  It was agreed that in order to vet the artists, they should provide a sketch of their work/concept for Committee and business owner review.  It was suggested that perhaps local hardware or paint stores could be contacted to donate the paint needed, or perhaps business owners would volunteer to contribute to the paint.  Jim will take the lead on this project.  At the next meeting we should be able to review artist sketches and Jim will prep the business owners.  Discussed whether or not Building Codes covered painted murals.  Paul said that Elaine Petrillo would be able to advise.
It was suggested that musical performers might do street corner performances in the warmer weather and inside local businesses in the colder weather.  James will contact the HS Music program to see if their members would be interested is such an event.  James said he and Mike would spearhead.
Gerrie advised that she and Dan were discussing making pallet benches for the bandshell.  It was determined that the benches would need to be sturdy and perhaps pallet material would not be suitable.  Talk at next month’s meeting regarding other options.
Carmelina agreed to co-chair the Photography subcommittee since Cathy is over extended.
Brian suggested an alternative theatre event for the upcoming holiday season.  Bring the trolley to town and have performances of A Christmas Carol throughout the town – perhaps ending in the cemetery for the future ghost sequence.  It was suggested that Restaurants could sponsor, with participants landing in their space for a price fixe dinner at the end of the performance.  It was advised that we need to act early on the Trolley as it would book up during the holiday season.
Brian also a Beach/Surf/Zombie movie theme for an event in October to be held at the RR station parking lot.  Bring on Rosie’s pizza, Green Planet and Beach Diner as possible sponsors to be onsite to sell food and beverages.  Purchase an inflatable movie screen to show the movie, which would be a reusable asset amongst several Sub committees.  This type of event is replicable and could also be held in the Spring and Summer.
Marisa advised that in order to fill out Grant applications, she needed information from the Sub committees with respect to their needs/requests.  Information needed to be cost specific.  Laurie agreed to send out an email to all members to ask Sub committee chairpersons to let Marisa know their short and long term requests.
Gerrie advised that the President of the Photographic Society of America, Elena McTighe, would be teaching a class regarding how to take better smartphone pictures.  The event will take place on September 13 and Gerrie will take care of sending the notice out.  Cost will likely be $10-$15 through Paypal.
Gerrie advised that Cathy is swamped and needs some assistance on the Social Media committee.
The upcoming Gala was discussed – Cathy, Gerrie, Laura, Joylene and Paul met to review options.  Looking to have a white attire/décor theme, with Art adding color.  A well-known artist would be in attendance, doing a living portrait which would be auctioned off at the end of the function.  Possibly February/March 2019 for the event.  Still looking for a venue.
Paul advised that any upcoming events held in Town venues that needed approval should be brought his attention no later than Wednesday, August 29th  so that he could present it at the next Council meeting.
Barbara suggested that pamphlets with Arts Committee events be printed and left at local businesses for distribution.  Also might hand them out at the Bonfire.  Get a table at next year’s Seafood Festival.
The meeting adjourned at 8:35 pm.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, September 24th at 7:00 pm in Borough Hall.
