Beautification Committee Minutes

November 30, 2021

The meeting at the Borough Hall was called to order at 7:00 PM by Committee Chair, Mary Steiner.

The following members were in attendance:  Sue Dietz, Danielle Dolan, Maryann Ellsworth, Dorothy Hadley, Karin Magala, Gary Mecca, Penny Mecca, MJ Rossilli-Mitchell, Sandy Pasola, Monica Post, Mary Lynn Ritchings, Chesla Wechsler, and Committee Chair Mary Steiner.

Upon motion by Monica, with second by Sandy, the minutes of the October 21, 2021 meeting were unanimously approved.

Committee Chair Steiner explained that the holiday cookie baking for the DPW and other Borough offices is a nice gesture for the employees which they all appreciate. Members should bake 2 dozen each of two kinds of dessert. Trays will be delivered on December 13th. Members should drop their baked goods to MJ’s house before 6pm on December 11th as Sue and Jeanine will be assisting MJ in preparing dessert trays for various offices on Sunday. Maryann will send out a reminder email.

Committee Chair Steiner thanked all who helped with holiday decorating. The solar lights didn’t work on the light poles but look good in the planters. She reminded all to lock their cars while doing Beautification work. Arlene had her purse stolen out of her car while she and Sandy were putting up garland.

Sandy reported that the light was still out in front of the sign at Borough Hall. She is still compiling a list of locations where pavers are piled around utility poles.

Danielle will remove the begonias around the War Memorial.

Committee Chair Steiner reminded all that Mary Lynn was collecting the planter plugs. The Parking Authority sign in front of Sue’s garden on Arnold Avenue will be moved. She will email members who have not made any meetings and are not helping with gardens, barrels or planters as to whether they would like to remain on the committee. Holiday luncheon for the Public Works and Water Departments will include platters of sandwiches, desserts and bottled water.

All members present were in agreement to cancel the December meeting. The next meeting will be January 25th. All 2022 meetings will be held in the Borough Hall public meeting room on the 4th Tuesday of the month barring conflict with special Council meetings.

MJ began discussion about removing the row boat from the Broadway/Ocean garden.

The Committee Chair added that it should be up to those members who maintain that garden to make that decision. She was part of the group that installed it over 15 years ago.

Discussion ensued regarding the deterioration of the boat and the sharp metal edges which preclude it being buried as it would pose a future digging hazard.

Committee Chair Steiner added that it would have to be removed, but not by public works. She suggested speaking with High School to get students who need volunteer hours for various reasons.

Karin suggested meeting there in the spring to decide how to remove the boat.

Sandy asked for some solar lights for her planters. There was discussion of where else to put them with the planter by Joe Leone’s as a suggested site.

Sandy called Manasquan to get a ball park price from the company they hire to put garland on their light poles. They also remove and fluff the garland.

MJ suggested getting prices from local landscapers.

Gary suggested alerting the Council to the fact that the Committee will no longer be able to handle the garland on the poles.

MJ asked about putting up holiday banners. The veteran banners are still on the poles. (Someone would have to volunteer to put them up).

Stone Harbor has a company that handles the garland on their poles. They put starfish on the garland. Maryann will call Stone Harbor for pricing.

Chesla has a box of Christmas bows but needs a decision regarding their viability.

Committee Chair Steiner reported that Alan is compiling a comparison chart on prices of flowers for 2022. Andrews doesn’t charge to deliver.

Mary added that the Committee’s budget request for 2022 was $4,000.00.

Decision was made to skip putting the little American flags on light poles.

Public participation was opened and closed with no member of the public participating.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:02 pm upon motion by Sue and second by Sandy.

Respectfully Submitted,

Maryann Ellsworth
