Beautification Committee Minutes

June 23, 2020

The Zoom meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM by Committee Chair, Mary Steiner.

The following members were in attendance: Dave Cavagnaro, Maryann Ellsworth, Janine Mastrokalos, Gary Mecca, Penny Mecca, Maureen Kale, John Palang, Robyn Palang, Sandy Pasola, Monica Post, Mary Lynn Ritchings, M J Rossilli-Mitchell, Alan Steiner, Mary Steiner and Council Liaison Arlene Testa.  Kristin Orlando, a public member, was also in attendance.

Upon motion by Sandy, with second by M J, the minutes of the February 20, 2020 meeting were unanimously approved as read.

Chairperson, Mary Steiner, reviewed what’s happened since the committee last met:

1)         Trees and plants for spring plantings were delivered to and picked-up at the home of Sue Dietz. They have all been planted.

2)         Maryann and Bob repaired all barrel staves in need of repair.

3)         Checked on the status of all sprinklers

4)         Spoke with Mayor Kanitra who would like to see new barrels and suggested using a Fisher Fund Grant to purchase same.  The Committee has already utilized its Fisher Fund Grant for this year, however.

5)         Large flags are in a container in the Borough Hall basement, which is currently being remediated.  Most of the containers located there can neither be found nor accessed.

6)         Small flags are ready to go but will not be put up until the graduation flags come down at the end of July. Will ask Council Liaison Cortes to put them up.

7)         There is currently a problem with one of Jacqui Glass’s barrels.

8)         The Lantanas in the barrels look skimpy now but are starting to fill-in and should be fine (Sandy will pick-up an additional Lantana).

9)         Anyone who would like to mulch their barrels can pick-up mulch at the DPW garage.

10)       Don’t forget to water!!  If you are having problems watering contact Mary.

11)       Gardens are looking good and all their sprinklers are working.

Robyn reported that she was having a problem with weeds; bought Preen but that’s not helping; Sandy, Mary S, and Dave had suggestions…a combination of salt, white vinegar and Dawn is working for Sandy.

Mary S. reported that the first edition of the town newsletter did not include Beautification; she contacted the Mayor who reached out to the person in charge to correct this oversight for the next quarterly newsletter.

Review of protocols:  Beautification members are caretakers of town property; any requests for changes or contacts of town personnel should go through its chairperson.

Mary S. reported that she is purchasing Miracle Gro for the gardens and barrels and will be contacting members regarding distribution of same. She checks barrels and gardens early in the morning and will contact members whose areas may require help.

Public Portion:  no one wished to speak

New Business:  M J reported that mulch is currently on sale.  Robyn asked about rocks and Mary S. responded that she had contacted DPW and was told there are none at this time. Council Liaison Testa has a contact with a florist that will provide flowers at a 50% discount to Beautification. Dave reported that the Municipal Clerk cannot update the Borough website; changes must go through the site developer.  Gary asked for a list of barrels and gardens with their caretakers; Alan responded that although it was previously sent in March, he would resend.  Council Liaison Testa volunteered to check with Mayor Kanitra regarding the signs.

Meeting adjourned 7:35pm

Respectfully Submitted,

Maryann Ellsworth
