The Borough of Point Pleasant Beach is currently experiencing a higher-than-normal incidence of rabies positive raccoons throughout Point Pleasant Beach and Point Pleasant Borough. The rabies virus can infect any mammal, including dogs, cats, small wildlife and humans. Outbreaks such as this occur periodically, and will eventually subside, but until then we are taking steps to ensure that residents and visitors to Point Pleasant Beach are aware of this occurrence, and can act appropriately if a situation arises.
We are asking residents and visitors to avoid all contact with any unleashed animal, and to call the Point Pleasant Beach Police Department should they observe or come into contact with any animals that seem sick, aggressive, or seems to be acting strangely. Symptoms include changes in behavior, including aggression and agitation and excessive salivation. Please do not attempt to feed, trap, or take any wild animals into your home. We would also encourage adults to teach children to never approach unfamiliar dogs, cats or wildlife, even if they appear friendly.
Animals that are outdoors may be exposed to rabies from other wild animals, and we suggest that residents keep their pets leashed, and inside your yard or home. Please check that your dogs and cats are licensed, and have valid rabies vaccinations.
The Borough of Point Pleasant Beach will continue to keep you informed of continuing events. The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department can be reached at 732-892-0500. Should you need to contact the town in reference to licensing your animal, you may do so by calling the Board of Health at 732-892-1118, Ext. 217.
