NPP NEWSLETTER – SPRING 2008

Spring 2008

Neighborhood Preservation Program

Procedures concerning how to obtain an award of funds from the Neighborhood Preservation Program grant are now available. There are two basic types of awards. There is one for residents and one for businesses. Requests for the procedures should be directed to the NPP Office.

The requests for award funds will be evaluated by the NPP Planning Committee. Projects will be judged on the amount of improvement they provide to the NPP Corridor as well as project merits. The committee is seeking to provide an overall improvement to the Broadway/Ocean Avenue corridor.
Note: Should any family’s income fall within the 2007 Median Income limits for Ocean County, the family might be eligible for additional funds.

The Point Pleasant Beach Police Department is in the process of establishing a new Neighborhood Watch Committee. The first meeting was held on April 16, 2008. There was a public meeting held on April 17, 2008 to unveil the proposal. The posters may be viewed in the NPP office. Please call before stopping by. The final plan should be ready in May

Share the Road

The best way to educate motorists on bicyclists’ rights to the road is to ride respectfully and have facts on your side. Here are some resources for cyclists and drivers on sharing the road.

A) CYCLISTS ON THE ROAD:
1) THE SAME LAWS THAT APPLY TO MOTORISTS APPLY TO CYCLISTS
2) OBEY ALL TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES
3) USE HAND SIGNALS TO INDICATE STOPS AND TURNS OTHER USERS

B) Always Wear a Properly Fitting Helmet:
1) Wear a helmet, no matter how short the trip

C) Ride on the Right:
1) Always ride in the same direction as traffic
2) Use the furthest right lane that heads to your destination
3) Slower moving cyclists and motorists stay to the right

D) Ride Predictably:
1) Ride in a straight line
2) Don’t swerve in the road or between parked cars
3) Check for traffic before entering street or intersection
4) Anticipate hazards and adjust your position accordingly

E) Be Visible:
1) Wear brightly colored clothing that provides contrast
2) Use a white front light in low light conditions
3) Use a red rear light in low light conditions
4) Use a reflector or reflective tape or clothing anytime
5) Announce yourself by making eye contact with motorists

SHARING THE ROAD: MOTORISTS

A)DRIVE CAUTIOUSLY:
1) REDUCE SPEED WHEN ENCOUNTERING CYCLISTS
2) DON’T TAILGATE, ESPECIALLY IN BAD WEATHER
3) RECOGNIZE HAZARDS CYCLISTS MAY FACE AND GIVE THEM SPACE

B) Yield to Cyclists:
1) Bicycles are considered vehicles
2) Cyclists should be given the appropriate right of way
3) Allow extra time for cyclists to traverse intersections

C) Be Considerate:
1) Scan for cyclists in traffic and at intersections
2) Do not blast your horn in close proximity to cyclists
3) Look for cyclists when opening doors

D) Pass with Care:
1) When passing, leave four feet between you and a cyclist
2) Wait for safe road and traffic conditions before you pass
3) Check over your shoulder before moving back

E) Watch for Children:
1) Children on bicycles are often unpredictable
2) Expect the unexpected and slow down
3) Don’t expect children to know traffic laws
4) Because of their size children can be harder to see

RECYCLING UPDATES

Our recycling methods have changed a bit because the COUNTY has implemented a single stream recycling program. ALL NEWSPAPERS, MAGAZINES, WHITE PAPER, and CARDBOARD must be placed in a COVERED container with a lid. You can use a trash can with a lid or get a rectangular plastic container with a lid. Container should weigh less than 50 pounds. Pick up will be on Wednesday and must be brought to the curb.
