FALL 2007
NPP Newsletter 3 Fall 2007
The Neighborhood Preservation Project (NPP) is moving forward. Together with the assistance of the Borough Council we have purchased 5 sets of trash/recycling cans and placed them on strategic corners in the NPP Corridor. Additional cans are part of the 5 year plan that is still in the planning phase.
With the assistance of the Borough Administrator, Ocean County is putting cross walks at Broadway and Boston Avenue and Ocean and Water Avenues. We will be working to get additional crosswalks as well as pedestrian crossing signs.
Winter trash and recycling pickup has resumed.
NPP is working with the Recycling Committee regarding the County’s new recycling rules.
A Bicycle Path Study has begun in the Borough. A committee has been formed to work with the consultants who have been hired by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. We had our first meeting on September 20 to discuss the nature of the program. The program includes the following 7 tasks:
1) Field investigation & data collection.
The Borough was asked to provide GIS maps, 3 years worth of police reports for bicycle & pedestrian clashes, traffic volumes, speed, traffic studies, master plan for area, development initiates for area, summer occupancy rates for motels & rentals.
The Borough was also asked to suggest best weekday time and Saturday time for data collection.
2) Bicycle needs assessment – from the information gathered in data collection and through input from the steering committee – will use the NJDOT Bicycle/Pedestrian Master Plan Analysis tool to help evaluate bicycle demand & sustainability.
3) Recommended bicycle network – PB (the consultant) will use findings of first 2 tasks to identify a recommended future network of bicycle routes.
4) Promotional strategy & safety awareness network – PB will recommend a strategy to encourage use of bicycles & bicycle safety – these may include information & maps about the bicycle routes, way finding, safety campaigns geared towards children, drivers, and/or adult cyclists
5) Community involvement – steering committee to establish goals and provide guidance for the program as well as collecting feedback from the public
6) Prepare bicycle plan – final report summarizing study & recommendations –final one to include comments from Steering Committee, NJDOT & the public
7) Project management – PB to coordinate all aspects – project expected to take about 8 months
Volunteers are needed for some Borough Committees; please advise if you are interested in participating!
There is also a survey available to obtain opinions on the streetscaping of Broadway to make it more attractive and to slow down traffic. If you are interested, please contact me and I will get a survey to you.
This is where we are now. Any comments and/or feedback/suggestions are welcome. You can direct them to Sharon Brenner Cadalzo, NPP Coordinator, 732-892-1118 x232 or npp@pointbeach.org. Feel free to contact any of the Committee members and bring your concerns to them as well.
